Horrific and disturbing video has emerged on the Internet via the DailMail of starving, skeleton-thin sun bears begging for food from visitors at an Indonesian zoo.
The bear is standing on his hind legs, and he's so tiny that you can see his whole ribcage because of being starved without proper food!
Visitors at Bandung Zoo, on the island of Java, felt so bad for the bears that they threw cake, crackers, candy and any type of food in a sad attempt to feed the starving, emaciated bears. Watch what happens here:
This is just too much sadness! - the poor, trapped animals are not even receiving basic rights such as food or water. Scorpion, a wildlife trade monitoring group, even sent an animal investigator to the zoo where they captured this footage of bears begging for any kind of food.
Gunung Gea, the director of Scorpion, told Daily Mail Australia: "When my team visited the zoo last week there was no grass or live trees on the floor of their cage. We saw a sun bear eating its own dung but when we contacted the zoo's officers they told us the bear was medicated and we weren't allowed to see it."
This is an outrage - the poor animal is so hungry that he's forced to eat his own feces. The video is heartbreaking to watch. These beautiful creatures aren't even given basic necessities and are forced to live between concrete walls without even proper shelter.
Clearly, Bandung Zoo doesn't have the means or the heart to care for their animals and deserves to be shut down, for the sake of their animal's lives. These bears need to go to a safe sanctuary where they can be cared for and nurtured back to health, if possible.
People on Trip Advisor have ranked the zoo very poorly, with many worried commenters warning other tourists not to visit. Patrick H said, "The condition of this zoo is very bad. Animals don't receive enough treatment because they all look so thin and sad. There is a lot of garbage, very dirty. The cages' condition is also not good. I hope the government will improve the condition of this zoo soon."
Fifteen other commenters had rated the zoo as "terrible" including a user named FlyawayAZ who said it was the worst zoo he had ever visited.
"Animals thin and in poor condition. In many cases they are in extremely small cages with no natural materials. Old, rusty cages… but most importantly was the sadness of the animals in small, cement pens."
"A sun bear was in a small cement 'pit' with a metal gate...we stood above him and looked down as he stood on his hind legs, looking up at us and begging for food."
This just shows that these animals are not being cared for properly at all - why even have a zoo if all you do is mistreat and starve animals? It's like a prison!
We are asking the Mayor of Bandung to please CLOSE this zoo. It clearly has no right taking care of animals and to send the animals to a safe rehabilitation location. This is NOT right and needs to be changed immediately!
